Tuesday Morning Odds and Ends, Maybe He's Cleaned Up Instead of Washed Up Edition
First... I can't be the only person that was incredibly sad watching the the last at-bat last night, can I? Kerry Wood, closer, versus Michael Barrett, Padres backup catcher. It just reminds you of how the past few seasons could have really turned out differently for us, huh? 2007 and (so far) 2008 are great, but it would've been nice if 2004, 2005 and 2006 could've been part of that, too.
Len Kasper is chatting live on Baseball Prospectus, starting at noon - so hurry on over!
Big Z, on his triple last night: “I’m fast, huh?” Guy has a 2.51 ERA, 57 strikeouts, eight wins, and is hitting .366/.366/.537 to go with it. Just so we're clear here - he's outpitching Brandon Webb and outhitting Micah Owings. The national media needs to get over their high-desert bias and start showing Z some respect.
Lou wants another pitcher. The victim would probably be Micah Hoffpauir. We step one day closer to two of my dreams - Jason Marquis fielding a position and Mark DeRosa pitching.
Chad Fox has ulnar neuritis:
The ulnar nerve, like the median nerve, can be impinged and irritated at the wrist. The ulnar nerve runs down the ulnar (small finger) side of the wrist. It supplies sensation to the small and ring fingers as well as controls the small muscles of the hand. Signs of impingement of the ulnar nerve are numbness of the ring and small finger and loss of grip and pinch strength. Similar factors as those seen with carpal tunnel syndrome can contribute to ulnar neuritis. ... Initial treatment consists of avoiding direct pressure on the ulnar nerve (small finger side of the hand) and wearing padded gloves. These measures usually improve the symptoms. Only rarely is surgical release of the ulnar nerve at the wrist required.
Edmonds doesn't want to dwell on his time in San Diego, probably because it lasted about a month and he was absolutely miserable during it. So far as a Cub he's hit .286/.324/.543 - he started off his first eight games hitting .125/.160/.125, and since shifting his stance he's hit .636/.667/1.455. Edmonds' hitting the rest of the season is an open question at this point.
I've been critical of the Edmonds signing, and wouldn't mind being too wrong here. That said, I'm not entirely sold on Jimmy's hitting yet, and I'm still skeptical of him on defense.
He and Dome will have the day off today, so look for an all-righty lineup. Let's try and score enough runs that we can let Jason Marquis pitch the complete game 20-hitter, huh?
