Saturday Morning Odds and Ends, Goatrider on the DL Edition
This'll be brief and a little loopy - combination of back spasms and muscle relaxants makes it hard to stay seated at the computer for too long. So I'm day to day currently - I'm available for pinch hitting off the bench, but you wouldn't want to see me try to play defense right now.
Sean Gallagher stays in the rotation, for now. Hill and Marshall have both been pulled early from their last respective starts with injuries, and the Cubs seem to like Lieber more in long relief. Hill will throw the dreaded simulated game on Sunday.
Soriano says his legs feel fine.
Lou gets a bit more explicit with his threats to play Hoffpauir in the outfield. The player's union is probably recording every Cubs press conference now as documentation for their collusion case against Bonds.
(On that note - Chicago sportswriters, I have a free box of Steak'ums in my freezer for the first one to ask Piniella or Hendry about Bonds. You're required to provide the postage.)
Sullivan also mentions the possibility of trading for Adam Dunn or Ken Griffey Jr. I like Adam Dunn very much; he hits baseballs hard and far and that provides me with amusement. I not so much like the Junior at this point; he is the old and busted, slugging only .382 so far this season.
Remember yesterday, when I suggested that Ryan Theriot's SLG could drop below his OBP? That happened tonight; his current batting line is a stately .320/.398/.396. That's an ISO (slugging minus batting average) of .076, down from even last season's anemic .080. This is seemingly connected with his improved batting average - Theriot's fly ball rate and his line drive rate have dramatically shifted since last season, with his ground ball rate remaining constant. He's apparently sacrificing what little power he had for more singles.
Also, congrats to Harry of Cubs f/x (which you really should be reading) for being mentioned in the Wall Street Journal.
