Granderson gone; We want Cabrera!
Curtis Granderson is off the table. He's a Yankee now.
The move could create an opportunity for the Cubs, now that the Yanks' Melky Cabrera appears expendable.
Cabrera is an average defensive center fielder, with a league-average bat. He's also not yet 27, which at the very least says that his skill set will not be hampered by the effects of old age anytime soon (unlike our left fielder -- guh).
For me, he's gotta be the new #1 option for CF. A young guy that still has a little room to grow offensively, a switch hitter, with a decent glove -- boom. Fits our need pretty much exactly.
Would you trade Brett Jackson for him?

yes!
Yes!
Would you trade Brett Jackson for him?
No. Mike Cameron is better than Cabrera, and can be had without trading away our CF of the Futureā¢.
Prospects are prospects.
Prospects are prospects. Also, Cameron would likely only work as a one or two year fix, whereas I'm sure Melky is under team control for several years yet.
Melky's contract status
He earned $1.4 million as a super two player this past season. He's got three years of arbitration eligibility ahead of him before free agency. I suppose it would depend on what kind of contract Cameron wants, but if its reasonable, i would rather keep Jackson and bring Cameron on board. Besides, if Hendry were going to approach Cashman about Melky, he should see if the deal can get done with a lesser prospect or two. I don't relish the idea of dealing away our best position prospects.
I guess Brett Jackson is
I guess Brett Jackson is probably on a lot of Top Ten lists for best Cubs prospects... but the kid is just a year out of college. So much of his ranking relies on projection and development.
Melky is not a superstar, but he's definitely a valuable asset as an average center fielder with a league average bat. Three arb years of him could end up being much more valuable than one of Cameron plus whatever Brett Jackson produces. (Admittedly, it could be worth a lot less, too.)
That said, looks like Hendry's not interested, so get ready to buy your Cameron jersey shirts.
"get ready to buy your Cameron jersey shirts"
I'm not quite ready to take it that far, AJ.
no truth to the rumor
that I am posting responses under the moniker "Eddie". We just happen to agree on everything
Why would you want to trade a
Why would you want to trade a guy that put up a .318/.418/.488 line in his first taste of pro ball for a fourth ourfielder?!? Cabrera's ceiling is Gary Mathews Jr.
