Now, I am not going to say that I know what that one piece is... but it seems like we are "oh so close." I hear all the talk about Halladay and have to wonder why the Cubs can be a major contendor for Peavy but not Holliday. I am not saying that we are one Ace away... I happen to think that our starting 5 is pretty darn good (especially now that Harden is finding his old form). But I have to think that Jake Fox, Hoffpaiur and others are pretty attractive trade bait considering that they would be starters for certain other teams. What about making a move for a legit second baseman (no, Baker is not the answer) and a left handed power hitter in left and bring Bradley in as a PH hitting switch??? Fuku is playing a mean outfield- he seams to relish the CF role. The bullpen seems to be getting stronger as the season wears on. Maybe if the Cubs could deal Heilman along with some good farm talent, move Wells into the bullpen and add Halladay... that would be nice. Or, get Matt Holliday from the A's for some pitching and a couple good farm-hands in a similar move?!?!?! Baltimore is out of it, maybe Brian Roberts could be in our future? Just thinking out loud here. What do you guys think?
What's our 25-man roster look like once Soto comes back?
The starting line-up:
The rotation: Z, Lilly, Demp, Wells, Harden
The 'pen: Gregg, Marmol, Guzman, Heilman, Marshall, two of Hart/Ascanio/Stevens/Samardzija/Ryan/Waddell/whatever
If these guys just PLAY THE WAY THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO, we're good to go. It hasn't happened yet, and maybe it won't this season. But I don't know who we could reasonably acquire that would have a significantly higher upside than any of these guys. This is the team; live by it, die by it.
If you cant say what that one piece is, then how can you say one piece is all we need?
We could really use an upgrade at 2B.
