Today in Baseball History - January 21th
1902 - Slappy McAdams joins the Boston squad. Teammates would later find out how he earned the nickname "Slappy". It's not what you think. I..I can't even describe it. I think I'm going to be sick.
1953 - Joe DiMaggio is denied entry to the Hall of Fame.
...wait, what?
1960 - Stan Musial insists that he take a $20,000 pay cut. Insists! That year Musial would also insist that he wear his underpants on his head and snaiis down his pants. Stan Musial was not a well man.
2005 - Roger Clemens asks for a record 22 million dollars in his salary arbitration deal. He'd later settle for 18 million dollars and six boxes of horse testosterone.
2009 - Cubs acquire Jake Peavy in 6 for one deal.

Ha
I bet it will take more than 6 guys to pull it off at this point
Vitters, Cedeno, Olson,
Vitters, Cedeno, Olson, Hart, Guzman, and Hill.
You're crazy
you're crazy if you don't think Sean Marshall & Garret Olson will both be in the trade
it will take every bit of......
Vitters, Marshall, Olson, Hart, Cedeno, W. Castillo, and likely others still
But going off of what the Braves had out there early in the process, even the players mentioned above don't compare
And in the first one you suggested, Ronny Cedeno & Rich Hill both would have very little value and wouldn't be equivalent to one good player combined. Along with the fact that Angel Guzman has been injured more than he's been healthy. I think if the Pads were willing to even look at the trade you suggested it would have been a done deal long ago, but there is simply too much risk and not enough value in the package of guys that you suggested. I realize they are desperate to shed Peavy's contract, but I have a feeling the fans would riot in the streets of San Diego if they traded their ace for a basket full of question marks and one solid prospect.
Cedeno has value; he is a
Cedeno has value; he is a young, competent shortstop signed for under a million bucks. See:

The important thing to remember in this deal is that the Padres are not in control. If they need payroll relief, and moving Peavy's the only way to get it, then they can only move Jake to a team he approves. So it's not really a "competing offer" issue, i.e. the Braves original offer.
I think Marshall's an important piece in 2009, and potentially beyond. Maybe give up Marshall to keep Vitters, but I don't see both being included.
Along the lines of something Rob has said in the past, I think we should give up pretty much anything we've got that isn't a vital piece of our 2009 plans. I think Marshall is very important as rotation insurance. Vitters, and everyone else, ship 'em, whatever.
Ok
Fangraphs likes Ronny, but if he doesn't get traded does the guy even make the MLB roster? Most likely not, so he has to clear waivers, and again most likely that wouldn't happen either. If I know that much I surely hope the Padres do too, so if they know that why wouldn't they wait and just claim Cedeno on waivers if they want him so bad?
I realize the Braves offer doesn't still stand, but the point is the Padres didn't take that package and it was much better than what the Cubs will be able to put together now or anytime soon. Yes the Padres are desperate to move him, but the cubs are far from in the driver's seat concerning this deal. Realistically the Pads could hold Peavy until the All-Star break and deal him to a team then or they could hold him for this entire season and trade him this time next year when his salary will nearly double. Alot could change between now and July and even more can change between now and a year from now, so other teams could easily come into the mix later down the road.
At this point in time the Padres are in complete control, as they can ask for anything they want and then choose whether to accept it or not. I'm no psychic or anything, but the further this drags on the more teams Peavy will likely consider, and the one team that scares me the most in that respect is the Red Sox. God I hate em', but the Red Sox have interest, they have the pieces to get him, and they have a winning organization - all it would take is Peavy's consent to go there.
By that argument, why'd the
By that argument, why'd the Orioles give up anything for Pie?
While I disagree with your stance that the Padres are in complete control, you are correct in saying that it's not all up to Peavy. I mean, really, it's up to all three parties isn't it? The Cubs, Padres and Peavy have to be happy.
In that case, I don't think the Cubs would be happy giving up Vitters AND Marshall for Peavy.
While
I don't think the Padres would be happy to trade Peavy with only Ronny Cedeno, Garret Olson, and Kevin Hart to put on their MLB roster to replace the loss of their franchise player. I agree that Marshall is a huge part of the 09 roster with or without Peavy mostly because of recent news about Harden's shoulder and his injury history.
The O's are emphasizing defense and Felix Pie has much more upside than Ronny Cedeno or Garret Olson, in my opinion. If defense is what a team is looking for then I would say that the O's have done a good job putting together a pretty sick defensive team; with Pie-Jones-Markakis in the OF. Its a good move by a team with limited funds, and adding Pie and defensive guys like Izturis should help the young staff they have improve. The trade made sense for both teams where each was able to fill one of their needs.
What you're suggesting is that the Padres are desperate enough to trade Peavy that they'd give him up to take a chance on Vitters developing into a MLB star or they are simply retarded. In any case I fully expect if Peavy comes to Chicago you will see Marshall & Olson both pitching in San Diego and Vitters somewhere in their farm system too. If you, or more importantly the cubs, think that is too much to give up to get Peavy then none of us should be holding our breath until we get him. I would fully expect all of the names the cubs don't want to lose to come up in these trade negotiations and that's because the Pads are going to have to get something in return to pull the trigger. The Pads have an owner, but their situation is no better than the cubs right now in that regards, and needless to say after last season if they strip down the entire team and getting nothing in return its safe to say that they will certainly lose any fans that have still remained.
