Goatriders of the Apocalypse

Heard around the newsroom

There aren't many advantages to interning at a newspaper. I don't get paid, I don't get bylines and I have to edit stories about physically disabled ducks (Yes, this is actually true), but there are some things that make this profit-less adventure worth wild.

For instance, I hear and read things in advance from people who get to have conversations with Cubs GM Jim Hendry and other Cubs executives on a daily basis.

And even though I don't work on the sports desk, information about the Cubs does cross my cubicle from time to time.

Here is what I heard today...

Sean Marshall is the leader to take over the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

Others in the running are RHPs Jeff Samardzija and Chad Gaudin. Marshall also seems to be the favorite over acquiring another starter via trade.

Speaking of trades...

The Cubs are actively looking for pitchers not named Jake Peavy.

Word on the street is Hendry is always looking to add more pitching in both the rotation and the bullpen, but the Peavy deal seems to be dead in the water until at least late July. Don't be surprised if the shopping continues however.

And finally...

Early word is that Milton Bradley is favored to hit fourth in the order between Lee and Ramirez.

It's been established that Bradley would hit somewhere in the middle of the order, and Cubs sources are saying the four spot is the frontrunner for now.

Personally I think the bigger news here is the Cubs are planning to keep Lee hitting third.

I know a lot of that wasn't earth-shattering news, but it's what some baseball writers are hearing right now.

I'll keep my ears open for ya.
