A Glorious Day for Chicago

Good morning friends.

Isn’t it a glorious day today?

Let me answer that for you: Yes it is Kyle. It is truly a day made in heaven.

And do you know why today is so grand? Because according to the Chicago Tribune, local asshat and national wang-doodler Jay Mariotti has resigned from his columnist position at the Chicago Sun-Times.

According to the Tribune article, Mariotti returned from his trip to China with a new realization that the future of journalism was in the Internet (and not the newspaper business that has so ridiculously over-paid for his services). Of course, the only person this is news to is Jay…who lives in his own little world.

As someone currently in graduate school studying to make journalism my profession, I find myself rejoicing over the fact that the business I want to be a part of so badly is finally shaking off one of its scarlet letters.

Over on my other blog, I rip Mariotti as often as possible for all his evils (I heard he literally writes his columns using the blood of innocent puppies and kittens as ink…insider information) and I take every opportunity to highlight his constant lowlights.

For those of you unaware of Jay Mariotti, he is a Chicago sports columnist with an ass for a brain. He rips on everyone and everything. He’ll write whatever it takes to sell a newspaper or two and doesn’t care about how little sense it makes along the way.

He’s burned bridges with every major sports franchise and their fans in Chicago, including our beloved Cubs. He thinks it’s fun to pick on broken down franchises rather than offer sensible, reasonable solutions to their issues.

But it gets worse.

Can you guess what happens when a Chicago team starts to play well? Like say our Chicago Cubs this season? He completely ignores them.

Nevermind writing about how he was wrong or praising the effort of the players and the support their fan base has given them. He just simply pretends like it’s not happening.

Need an example. Let’s look at the Cubs. When was the last time Mariotti wrote a column about the Cubs for the Chicago Sun-Times? June 30. Almost one month ago. Funny how the Cubs have gone 18-6 since July 30.

Now I ain’t no fancy baseball smart guy with a purdy number counter, but that sure sounds good to me.

Anyway, I just wanted to make sure everyone here knew what was up. I know this is a Cubs blog, but the whole city of Chicago can rejoice today.

Enjoy the first day of the rest of your Chicago sports lives.

Yes, it is true

...the man has no dick

Does that mean he wont be on

Does that mean he wont be on Around the Horn?

ATH

According to the Trib article, he plans to continue on Around the Horn. Suck.

math

This is truly great news. I can tell that you don't have a purdy number counter because June 30 was two months ago, not one. But, it's fine because I'm pretty sure you meant July.

Let's hope this means no Mariotti on ATH.

woops, thanks for the heads

woops, thanks for the heads up. yeah, it was july 30. i guess thats what kind of stupid stuff happens at 2 in the morning when i'm intoxicated with sweet euphoria.

Sucks that he will still be

Sucks that he will still be on ATH. Or maybe not, that whole show seems to be built around contrarian people like him, so with or without him it won't be much of a difference.

I'm also not so excited by his resignation, no I don't care for his writing style or his "opinions" but its not like he is going away. I'm worried that given his fairly big name in sports writing that he might sign on as a writer for maybe espn.com or some other similar high profile online news source. In that case it would actually be worse that he resigned from the sun-times.

Remember he resigned from the newspaper, not from writing.

Yes, the article does not

Yes, the article does not say Jay is retiring from writing, but it seems that he will be moving on from writing about Chicago. I find it hard to believe he will get another shot in the town that loathes him so much without being able to enjoy the protection of Sun-Times editor Michael Cooke (who spared him the wrath of the fans by removing the "comments" section from his columns on the Sun-Times website).

There is no doubt Jay will go on to write somewhere else, but that's the point. SOMEWHERE ELSE. He'll be much easier to ignore when he's writing at some website giving Michael Phelps and Tiger Woods virtual oral pleasure.

Let him be someone else's problem.

You underestimate his

You underestimate his ability to hate on teams. I think he has enough of it to still hate on the cubs on a regular basis. True he probably wont be only writing about chicago teams anymore (PLEASE OH GOD PLEASE) so that is some relief. I just fear that I will begin to hear his reporting as often as someone like Buster Olney (which is at least 3 times a day) which would make my head asplode.
