Lee, Fukudome, and the power of three (Cubs Win!)
Okay, I'm not sure what the whole "power of three" thing means, but I though it sounded really good after Lee and Fukudome. That's what we in the biz call "artistic license."
Anyway, finally the game we've been looking for. The game where the offense erupted with the fury of a thousand suns lots of hits. Derrek Lee lead the way with 4 hits, including his second homer of the season. In fact, if he could have coordinated a bit with Soto and swapped his second single for Geo's triple, he could have come away with a cycle. I'm sure Soto wouldn't have minded helping Lee make history.
But the big hit came - again - off the bat of Fuku. With two on a the Cubs tied, Fukudome took lefty Villarreal to the opposite field for a single (which Carlos Lee deftly turned into a double) scoring two. Shockingly, Fukudome had gotten ahead in the count and slashed at a 3-2 fastball; it's amazing how good things always seem to happen when a player is ahead in the count. If only the rest of the Cubs could take that approach.
Of course it wasn't all perfect. Soriano and Theriot were terrible once again and Bobby Howry continues to pitch like a minor leaguer little leaguer, plus Marquis was barely passable. But the offense was there and Wood looked great closing out a 9-7 victory.
Isn't life always better when the Cubs win?
Go Cubs.
