2008 Preview - Sean Marshall

I'm not sure what Marshall's biggest problem is. Is it that he's not that good? No, it can't be that. After all, Marshall sported a nifty 119 ERA+ in 2007. For those counting, that would be an ERA 19% better than the league average. For those still counting, that would be good. For those still counting, put your shoes back on, we're done here.
Did you know: Sean Marshall had a strikeout to walk ratio of nearly 2:1. Again, good. Jason Marquis? Well, he had an ERA right at league average and a strikeout to walk ratio uncomfortably close to 1:1. Did you just tear up a little when you read those numbers? No? Heartless bastard.
What about Jon Lieber? Well, we don't speak ill of Jon Lieber because, as you surely know, Jon Lieber is the Cubs' last 20 game winner. I have many a fond memory of Jon Lieber and his enormous...truck (I bet you thought I was going to say ass, didn't you? That too). So I'd like to see him make a comeback with the Cubs, even if it's at the expense of Marshall.
But why does it have to be at Marhall's expense? Why should Marquis and Dempster have the advantage this Spring? Dempster was the worst of all four pitchers last year, but Lou seems to like him.
Wait, wait...I think I might have it. 2007 salaries:
Ryan Dempster: 5.33 million
Jason Marquis: 4.75 million
Sean Marshall: .327 million
Yes, I believe I see a trend there. You know it's annoying that rich veterans get the advantage. And while that's annoying, it's not the really annoying part. The really annoying part is that none of that money comes my way. What the hell? I write just as well as Marquis pitches. Where's the green? Where's the love?
Love me, reading public. LOVE ME!!!
Oh...and Sean Marshall should be starting.

Sean Marshall
I agree with you that Marshall deserves the job on merit, but I think it also has a lot to do with the fact that Marshall still has minor league options. Also, there are only two spots left in the bullpen, and without a trade, either Marquis or Dempster will get one of them, and there are strong contenders (Pignatello, Hart) for the other one.
