Fuku, Fukudome!
The longer this situation with Fukudome goes on, the more convinced I am that he's just not mentally tough enough to come to America. I mean, here's a guy who was going to announce last week, no wait, before this weekend, no, on Monday night, no, maybe today. At this point, his agent is scrambling. A Monday night announcement turned into Fukudome "telling his agent privately," so that his agent can announce it at some point on Tuesday.
Give me a Fukudomin' break.
Perhaps our hero from Japan doesn't have the mental toughness, or the competitor's spirit necessary to make the transition. Perhaps he's hemming and hawing because he doesn't know if he can succeed, or he's afraid he'll get homesick. I don't know. But the point is, the Cubs should be looking to acquire guys who want to be here. They should be looking for guys who want to win. Not guys who hem and haw, nor guys who might enter a depression and start slumping because they regret their choices.
In other words, while I love Fukudome for his name and for his potential to succeed, perhaps it would be more sensible for Jim Hendry to pursue a different player.
UPDATE: For about the umpteenth time, Fukudome has announced he will not be playing in Japan next year and will be coming to America. Go get him, Jim. ...I guess.

If it sounds like

a pussy, it most likely is. Still in all fairness, we don't know shit about Japanese culture and more likely than not, Fukudome really needs to make sure his mommy is OK with her little boy coming over to the Big Bad US of A!
On the plus side...
I'm willing to bet that this guy is gonna be a gamer/samurai. The Japanese are much more ponderous as individuals and as a culture than we are. Plus, how easy do you think a decision to leave everything you know behind and journey into the unknown is? Had the Cubs picked up Chop MatSuey or Kuroda or some other Japanese player, this probably wouldn't have been an issue; but we don't have any asian players and/or players with Asian backgrounds (except D.Lee).
Back off this guy. He plays plus defense, runs well, is a smart hitter and an overall smart player (as are most players that come from Japan). Essentially, he's the anti-Jock. Let's see what happens...he can't be any worse than Clifford the Big Red Band-Aid...
Give the guy a break
I truly believe he knew his intentions all along and did what he had to in order to make a graceful and proper exit within the bounds of his culture. In fact, we could use some of that culture here.
You'll be glad to have him. Mark my words.
Now update the lineup. And update it after Hendry's next move.

It's disheartening to see
It's disheartening to see racial sterotypes being played out on these boards.
Hmmmm...
I guess I can see where you are coming from, but I always try to examine intent (quite challenging, I know). I don't believe anyone ment to be racist. I do believe we were pointing out valid cultural differences. Am I wrong? Could you elaborate on your comments?
