As long as the Cubs also sign him to an extension.

Yes

First, the Sox do suck.

Second, it would cost us Rich Hill, Felix Pie, and probably one other prospect... but it's Johan Santana we're talking about here. Pitching wins championships.

No (Bleep)-Yes option, so....

but yeah, I think the Cubs should trade for Santana. They should sign him to an extension too, but that doesn't need to happen immediately IMO. In fact, I think as far as starting pitching, we'd be looking pretty damn good:

Santana
Zambrano
Lilly
---------
Marshall
Prior
Marquis
Various youngsters and throwaway veterans

3 "Above the Line" and a nearly unlimited number of questionables for #4 and #5 (which really, isn't so bad at all).

I would even give up my Cubs ManCrushâ„¢ (Pie) and whoever else along with Hill.

Oh, and I Second the 'Sox Suck' vote. Not because I don't like them, which I don't. Just because they're bad and getting worse every day. Now that Ol' Man Wirtz is dead and McDonough is in the house for the Blackhawks, I believe the Hawks will unseat the White Sox as the 17th most popular sports team in Chicago.

Of course!

This is a no-brainer. CAN the Cubs trade for him, though? That's a tougher question, but the glaringly obvious answer is "no!"

I would like to respectfully suggest that Hendry neither has the firepower necessary, nor would he have the guts to give up the players necessary even if he had them.

DUH!

That was a no brainer.

PS.....Sox still suck

Not just yes ...

... but hell yes!

Make the deal, include Hendry's children if necessary.

Pie's just the latest product of the Cubs farm system that hasn't generated a position player since ... who exactly? If (Mitch and) Rich must be included, alright, but I'd rather hold on to him (them). Same for Murton. And probably any of the other young position players for the Cubs. Make the deal.

Just get the extension done up front.

pipe dream, peoples

No way this happens.

Too steep

Giving up a considerable amount of talent for the honor of offering 25 plus million a year, for 6 plus years, seems a little too much in my opinion. That's too much riding on one guy. There are other options out there that would give the Cubs more bang for the buck, like Dan Haren for instance.

Santana vs. Fukudome

VacCoyote: We are spending between $12 & $14 Mil for an unproven outfielder who just had an arm operation, Santana is a proven pitcher albeit in the Amer. Lea. "Sweet Lucy" said today it could take over a year for FUKIE to get adjustted to Chicago[Let's hope not]. Even with Fukudome we are still on pitchers, and YES IT IS STARTING pitching. After the "big" 3, it is veery iffy. I don't trust either Dunpster or Marquis any farther than I could throw them. Both are likely to have ERA's over 5.

Ehh.

The Cubs have never been in the running for Santana, and the reason probably has nothing to do with Johan's expected contract size. I'm sure that if the Twins contacted the Cubs and said "we'd trade you our ace for these prospects," the Cubs would jump at the chance... I just don't think they have the right prospects.
