Goatriders of the Apocalypse

"Quite frankly, Ricky should be playing before you. Ricky can still hit the ball."

File this one under "things I never thought I'd see." Ricky Henderson, one of the craziest and most talented players to ever bring joy to millions of baseball fans everywhere, has been hired as the hitting coach for the New York Mets. I can just invision some of his tips for his players:

  • "Ricky thinks you need to hit like Ricky."
  • "When you hit the ball hard, you gotta do it like Ricky does. Even if you got a shot for third, stop at second base 'cuz Ricky can't steal third base from third base, you dig?"
  • "Ricky may be in his late 40's, but he's a man who feels like he's in his late 30's and he could be doin' your job better than you!"

And so-on. I realize this has nothing to do with our beloved Cubbies, it's just that Ricky is so crazy that it's hilarious that he'll be instructing Major League hitters. Awesome.

In Cubs news, it turns out that the Cubs have been the hottest team in the NL since June 3. There might be a lot of reasons for this improvement, but Paul Sullivan suggests it may have been the fact that, after a meeting, Hendry and Lou made some changes in the team. They traded Barrett, benched Jacque and Cesar, gave Fontenot and Marmol roles on the team, and they banned Sammy's boombox from the clubhouse. (It was too weird that it was still blaring salsa music three years after Sammy left town; why did he have to put it on repeat before he left?)

The Cubs play tonight, and I'm sure we'll have some stuff for you before game time. Be sure to check back; also go back and read the Sloth's writing about Barry, and have a good day. Go Cubs!

Tonight?

So who are the Cubs playing tonight?

Anyway, it's been my contention that Ricky's still staying close to the game so he can come out of retirement after he's inducted into the Hall of Fame. If he stays inactive through next year, he'll get voted in and then, I suspect, he'll make a go at coming back, becoming the first Hall of Famer to play in a real game (Jim Palmer tried it back in the late '80's and failed miserably).

Mike, you're a scary man

That was EXACTLY what I was thinking

To Bob:

I actually wrote this back in February:

What schedule are you looking at?

I still see an empty calendar box for July 12; they do start a 10-game home stand tomorrow afternoon, though:

I *knew* the RedEye was full of it

They said "Friday AT Houston". Bastards...making me think it was safe to move the car this weekend...

invision?

"Envision" I think is what you mean, but maybe y'all spell it differently in Canada. Or since you also mention a non-existent game for tonight, perhaps there is a parallel universe that I'm not part of...where the boom box is still playing salsa.

Cubs Game, what Cubs Game?

Originally, the Cubs were going to make up the April 11 game against the 'stros today, but they played the game on June 11 instead.

This has been a message of Pestilence

No, sir.

I believe *originally* today was an open date. Sometime between April 11 and now, apparently not, but *originally* this was an off-day.

Blame me, not the drugs

For some reason I was under the impression that the Cubs were back today, and in my hurry to blog before I left for work I didn't double check. Oh well. You can't be wrong ... er, right all the time.

Ricky

Ricky will be perfect for this era's young ball players. When Ricky played it was all about Ricky and HIS stats. That should fit well with current players and their agents.
