How Does X Grab Ya...December 13th

Today's Grabber - Matt Capps

The Pirates decided not to tender a contract to their 3-year closer.  Now the Cubs have indicated interest in signing this guy, based on his own interest in joining the Cubs, more than likely based on his relationships with Grabow and Gorzellany.

Basically, we're talking about bringing back Kevin Gregg.  He had a decent 2007 and 2008, and royally sucked last year, posting an ERA over 5.  He claims he doesn't necessarily intend to compete for the closer's role if he comes here.  Certainly he represents a somewhat proven quality, and the argument could be made that he like most of his teammates lost interest after the latest of the Pirate Purges.  He very well could represent the 'veteran arm' Hendry wants to add to the bullpen, and for the reduced salary he would most likely command, we could do worse, I guess.

what about me?The problem I have with this rumored acquisition is with our current closer.  Carlos Marmol is not a mature individual.  He needs to feel like the job is his and his alone in order to maintain the concentration he needs to harness his stuff and be effective.  It might make tactical sense to bring in a 'backup' closer in case Marmol is injured or otherwise unable to fill his role.  But I worry that Carlos won't be able to concentrate with Capps lurking in the background.  The first time Marmol gags up a lead, every newspaper, blog, radio and TV outlet will start publicly wonder about when Capps will be asked to step in.  That ain't gonna work well, trust me.

For this reason alone, Matt Capps does NOT grab me.  I still want Kiko Calero because he seems to be a much more effective relieve, who will not represent a threat to Marmol.

Stats says:

In perusing the peripheral statistics provided by Fangraphs, I'm pretty sure I'd also prefer Calero to Capps. Calero is 12 years older, and averages 88 on his fastball, but still appears to get a ton of strikeouts.

FWIW, I think I've read that the veteran Hendry is looking for ought to be right-handed.

I'm with Rob -- I'd be very pleased to see the Cubs snag Calero.
