Cubs looking in on Furcal?

The LA Times casts some doubt on the idea that free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal will be back with the Dodgers. He wants a four-year deal, while the Dodgers are shying away from that due to his surgically repaired back. They say that seven other teams (including the Cubs) are interested.

Furcal is still a very good player, who rates no draft pick compensation from the team who signs him - we wouldn't have to surrender any draft picks if we inked him. I'd love to see this.

If we sign furcal

It would be a successful offseason, no matter what else we do (re: Wood, Dempster). It solves our SS problem with theriot (possibly moving him over to 2b) and gives a good excuse to finally move Soriano out of the leadoff spot. This would be HUGE.

Plus it could move Theriot into the trade bait column, as I imagine he's as overrated inside baseball as he is in fan-world. Could that be enough to get us over the top on Peavy? I don't think Pie will be with the team either, so Pie + Theriot + something else could be enough to get it done.
