Center field
Fact: the Cubs need a offensive center fielder for 2010, at least. Perhaps 2011 as well.
Fact: Mike Cameron would have been almost ideal, but he is now off the market.
Q: would Hendry have been able to sign Cameron if he was able to trade Milton Bradley during the Winter meetings?
My answer is - I don't think so. The $22 million still owed Bradley is spent money - either we pay it directly to him, or we pay it to a combination of a player from another team we receive in trade, as well as that team itself.
Lets just say that Tampa did send us Pat Burrell for Bradley. We'd have to pay Burrell his 2010 salary, which is the same as Bradley's 2010. Plus, Tampa would insist that we pay them the difference between what Bradley is owed in 2011 ($12 million) and what they think Bradley would be worth in 2011 (probably $3 million). So we'd be paying Tampa the bulk of Bradley's 2011 contract while he plays for them.
Therefore, the money we'd save would be almost none, certainly nowhere near enough to justify taking on Cameron, even on a one-year deal. As it turned out, Cameron got 2 years from the Red Sox for what, 13, 14, 15 million?
So, assuming Hendry is on a budget (which is a story for a whole other time), he cannot afford to take on Cameron, or Marlon Byrd, or any other experienced center fielder on the market.
I am afraid, Cub fans, that in 2010 center field will be manned by the three-headed cheap monster of Reed Johnson, Sam Fuld and Tyler Colvin. Which in my personal opinion is really going to suck, unless Soto, Ramirez, and Soriano ALL reach career highs in production. But make no mistake - this is not due to Hendry's inability to trade Bradley last week. Nobody in the majors is going to make a trade that would allow us to recoup much of the Bradley contract. We are stuck with crap in center because Hendry signed Bradley in the first place, that and signing Fooky, too. Don't forget we owe him $24 million over the next two years, too.
Why not leave the Fooker in center, and get a right fielder? 2 reasons - the first is that productive right fielders are no cheaper, and in fact more expensive, than productive center fielders. See where Jason Bay turned down 4x$15 million? Secondly, and more importantly, the Fooker was the single worst center fielder in the majors last year, by a wide margin. He's a "plus" right fielder, but a big "minus" center fielder. We never signed him to play center.
I guess what I am trying to tell you kids is, if you are looking for a splash of new blood to make your 2010 baseball season more exciting, forget it. We are going to see a level of "stability" unlike anything we have seen since pre-free agent days. Outside of Harden and Gregg, we are heading to war with the same team that went 83-78 last year. That's why I'm trying to pump up Kiko Calero...I'm afraid that Kiko, or a Kiko-esque figure, is going to be it as far as New Blood for 2010.
It ain't a fire sale, but then again, we don't really have anybody to fire sale with, anyway.

Haha. I just realized this
Haha. I just realized this same thing last night and got really depressed.
'bout what I was thinking
That was what I had feared would be the case. I had hoped for more, but nonetheless...
What about Ryan Church? Could he fit into the mix or would he just be one more mediocre guy in an already crowded outfield? Is it a given yet that Reed would be returning?
For the infield, what about Kelly Johnson? I know last year wasn't that great, but could he be a fit?
at least you're trying
but no, I am not interested in Church or either Johnson. It sounds like they might at least pay lip service towards Marlon Byrd. Byrd doesn't impress me either, Cameron was who I wanted.
Time to get young?
I really don't see this team doing anything in 2010. Is it time to trade off veterans and get young? I love Derrek Lee, but after this year I see him going somewhere else, or getting a typical bloated Hendry contract. Who would be interested in Derrek Lee? Would any team trade young guys for a year of his service? I don't know if a big market team like the Cubs could basically concede a year like this, but I think it would make them better in the long run. I'd love to see them get young, and get some speed.
Salary Dump for 2010?
I've been thinking along these same lines; write off 2010 and get younger. D Lee would be a good fit in San Fransisco and if Boston or Philly would take A-Ram, then suddenly there's a bit of payroll flexibility. Move Theriot to 2nd now and let Castro and Blanco duel it out at short while Vitters makes the jump to the big leagues at 3B. Let Hoff play first and take our lumps for 2010. With the current roster, the Cubs are looking at 78-83 wins. The starting pitching is going to be erratic again. Figure 10 wins for Zambrano, 14 for Lilly, 12 for Dempster, 12 for Wells and 6-8 for whatever stiffs go in the five spot. That's 56 wins out of the starters leaving the bullpen and assorted emergency starters to come up with the 35-40 wins needed to win the division. That's probably not going to happen. I say take the beating now and get ready for 2011
Word
I hate to see some of these guys go, but it's gotta be done. I'd love to get some young guys with speed. It'd be awesome to see a Cubs team that can manufacture runs. If they can get rid of some of these expensive old guys, then they should have money to spend on some established veterans in the future. Of course, this plan requires a decent GM. I think the rebuild plan needs to happen. It won't be fun, and I'm also not sure Cubs fans are smart enough to realize what's going on. I've been going crazy reading various posts all over the internet with outlandish trade speculation and swooning over recently non-tendered players.
I’m glad the front office is
I’m glad the front office is more focused on run-producers like Marlon Byrd rather than leadoff guys. Fukudome has a .440 OBP leading off against right-handed pitchers. Theriot, if he stops getting the green light on 2-1 counts, could get on base against left-handers. A leadoff platoon of Fukudome and Theriot would be more than adequate. Besides, Fukudome hitting 5th is pointless unless he’s the only left-hander we have to break up the right-handed hitters. That’s why Orlando Hudson would be a good 2B option.
Yeah
If we are forced to pick up someone this offseason, I am glad that it's a Marlon Byrd type. I think the team really missed DeRosa's numbers, and I'm hoping that if we get Byrd he'll put up similar numbers. Hopefully this guy doesn't get more than a year or two deal though. I'm terrified this outfield is going to end up an expensive graveyard of promising careers.

Maybe go after a blast from the past ... or send the entire Cubs team on a mountain climbing excursion. See: http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2009/12/former-cub-hee-seop-choi-ha...
HAHA
Soto will never make it up that mountain.
Carrot on a stick ...
... or a joint at the top may motivate him.
