Michael Barrett dealt
Wow, this came much more quickly than I could have ever dreamed. And not "dreamed" in the sense that "this fulfills my wishes and dreams" but more like "Hendry never acts this fast except in my dreams."
Actually, that second version sounds a bit weird. Nevermind.
The official word is that Michael Barrett has been traded to the San Diego Padres for Rob Bowen, a minor league outfielder, and cash. Bowen, throughout his career, has not been a very good hitter. He is, however, having a solid year this year with the bat and was considered something of a prospect at one point. Given the situation, however, more telling will be how Bowen handles the staff. Obviously the pitchers were very unhappy with Barrett behind the plate, so let's hope that Bowen does better (and that the outfield prospect is a good one).
Bowen certainly doesn't throw well with only 5 out of 50 base runners caught in his career, but there's more to a catcher than his throwing. He certainly can't be worse behind the plate, but I can't find a clear report on his defense even if I use all the powers of the internets. If anyone watched the Padres series (I missed most of it) and can give a clear read on his defense, please drop a comment.
I know lots of people will be happy (and my wife will stop screaming pretty soon), but I'm sort of sad. I've always been a big Barrett defender and was happy with his performance up until this year. It's obvious, however, that the team needed a shake up, so maybe this will help.
Welcome to the Cubs, Mr. Bowen. Try not go get into any fights.
